Fun fact: one of the leading theories of wolf domestication says that most wolves were too afraid to come near human settlements. Early humans tended to throw all of their refuse into piles. The wolves that were less afraid of humans could scavenge these refuse piles and eat the bones and rotten meat.
Over time, evolution led to less-afraid wolves succeeding, as they were well-fed without having to risk their lives hunting prey. Eventually, wolves would enter the settlements to interact with humans, at which point we began raising their pups.
This theory is contrary to older ideas that humans simply stole wolf cubs, which we now know would just end up with the wolf going feral when old enough.
