School's not for everyone fren, although I dropped out but after a couple of years I went back when I actually felt ready to go and did really well so there's always time if you ever do want to go back fren.
Also, be sure not to ignore your debt. I know that it's often the last thing you want to think about, but if you don't pay attention to it, it can get out of control.
Fren this hasn’t been mentioned but please make sure to go with your mental health in a good state because college will chew you to pieces and spit you out if you don’t have healthy coping methods.
Source: Seen too many friends succumb to alcohol abuse and end up dropping out along the road. Take advantage of your university health insurance and don’t be afraid to ask for help! Most importantly congratulations!
I’m going into finance. I heard that I ought to get a specialist degree like stats as opposed to broad degree like econ for getting a lucrative job. True?
Absolutely not, fren. Automation in my field (capital markets) would bring out responses specifically designed to game / take advantage of the automation. It would collapse, quickly and at spectacular cost.
People know the drawbacks of their own career. The corollary is that they tend to overestimate the awesomeness of other fields or underestimate how miserable other fields are. Finance had made me mighty comfortable, no complaints; however, I find the industry over-regulated and stagnating and would suggest to younger frens that less specific but still highly technical skills have lifetime value. Hence, stats.
I hate the automation meme. It’s employed by every retard to push for whatever change they want. If you google “(any profession) automation” you’ll get some articles claiming it to be a graveyard in 10 years, while others declare it the last bastion of the human worker.
I’m sure i’m 20 years we can look back and think about what a funny scare automation of white collar jobs was. On the other hand we may be out of work before our forties and wishing we took the devastating robotic threat more seriously.
You wouldn't get a Business Masters Degree, you'd get an M.B.A., a Masters in Business Administration. I don't recommend just getting one outright or you'll be doing some 50k/yr job at some dingy small gig. Most success stories I see about MBA's are people with heavily applied undergrads and some years experience then souping up their marketability with an MBA. So for instance a software engineer with a Computer Science minor getting an MBA to take on project management roles at tech firms. An applied mathematician getting an MBA to be qualified to lead a hedge fund. Etc.
Think of what you'd actually enjoy doing day to day. An MBA is a tool to move from simply doing that thing and moving into a senior leadership role for said thing.
Yeah exactly, I see the University I went to has implemented all these super specific bachelor's programs now which seems mental to me. When I did my maths B.S. I wished there was a tad more specialisation (couldn't choose between applied or pure for example, was all in one major) but now it's become way too separated and with some weird niche majors offered.

Okay so here we go fren!
• Bring sandals for the shower, if the shower is public sometimes frens peepee or poopoo in it. Stay healthy fren.
• Get an agenda so you can write down work. That way you stay on top of projects and become super smart!
• Sometimes you will need some more outlets in room, so get an octopus outlet!
• Remember to make frens fren! Sometimes college can be lonely, but with good frens things will be good!
This is just some basic advice, don't be afraid to ask for more!
1 Hard_Rain_Falling 2019-04-14

1 alexisthepyro 2019-04-14
Eh, even high-level finance jobs will likely be mostly automated in the near future, but you might have a good 10-15 years.
1 A_one_legged_man 2019-04-14
nope, i work in finance and no way will everything be automated. you can't programme an equity research analyst fren .
1 ptarvs 2019-04-14
My fren is doing applied mathematics at an ivy. He is going to be very wealthy fren. Maybe you will know each other
1 A_one_legged_man 2019-04-14

Why do people fud every profession? It makes choosing so difficult.

Automation is inevitable however. It's cheaper for bigfren to develop machines to use, rather than to hire frens.
1 MyAries 2019-04-14
My buddy is doing it, eventually you can get promoted to credit analyst and you’ll be good.
1 MehmedIIDidNoWrong 2019-04-14
Broad bachelors, specific masters.
Ex: Economics B.S., Data Mining Masters, or something to that effect.
I did a stats bachelors and stat computing MS for reference. Got good job opportunity fren.
1 Slump_o 2019-04-14
how worthwhile are masters business degrees in terms of ROI?
I’ve heard that you should just get a job out of school but i’m not terribly informed on this as Iv got quite a ways to go in college.
1 MehmedIIDidNoWrong 2019-04-14
You wouldn't get a Business Masters Degree, you'd get an M.B.A., a Masters in Business Administration. I don't recommend just getting one outright or you'll be doing some 50k/yr job at some dingy small gig. 1 MehmedIIDidNoWrong 2019-04-14
I wanted to follow up with you cause I actually work at a large Uni as a statistician and can see what students say they make by different breakdowns.
17% of MBA's got jobs paying less than 40k, 58% total under 70k.
Make of that as you will.
1 Slump_o 2019-04-14
That’s a surprisingly low number. I’m in NYC so maybe cost of living in your area is a lot lower?and balances out.
Thanks for the info anyways. I wonder what jobs these people are getting and whether they needed an MBA for them.
I mainly just want upward mobility for hard workers. I just don’t want to be in a “dead end” career.
1 Sergei_Suvorov 2019-04-14
And what about when you break it down into STEM degrees?
1 violettheatre 2019-04-14
Yeah exactly, I see the University I went to has implemented all these super specific bachelor's programs now which seems mental to me. When I did my maths B.S.
