Something you need to understand about this "fren" meme is that it's originally a Finnish meme, and many of the pictures originate from Finnish boards, so in many of these pictures there are small details that might seem a bit obscure to foreigners.
For example, Ginga : Nagareboshi Gin was a really popular dubbed anime in the 90's here and any 20-30 year old Finn would most likely recognize that character.
